In the 1960s, the British Army issued a request for a new reconnaissance vehicle. Two designs were produced as a result: one for a tracked vehicle and one for a wheeled vehicle. The FV101 Scorpion, made by prolific manufacturer Alvis, was the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) version. Entering production in 1972, it featured a rear turret, a 76mm gun, and a three-person crew layout and was the first all-welded aluminum vehicle in use with the British Army.
